Over the last three years, my research and leadership at the International Perspective for Policy and Governance (IPPG) have focused on advancing Ghana’s clean energy transition. Working closely with my colleagues, we have highlighted both the immense opportunities and the structural gaps that must be addressed for Ghana to fully benefit from the global energy transition and position itself as a continental leader. From this work, one reality has become clear: Ghana’s path to a clean and sustainable energy future requires more than ambition.
It demands private sector investments, stronger coordination among sector players, and sustained advocacy to push government toward the right policies and regulatory frameworks. Above all, it needs a unified industry voice to champion the transition. Encouragingly, government has signaled its commitment by renaming the Ministry of Energy to include “Green Transition,” which reflects the growing political will to prioritize clean energy. Now is the time to build on this momentum and foster stronger public–private collaboration.
While the sector is expanding, Ghana’s clean energy ecosystem remains fragmented, with companies, innovators, and investors often working in silos. Many struggle to fully benefit from existing policies due to limited coordination and weak stakeholder engagement.
Public understanding of the energy transition is also limited, despite its importance for reliable and affordable electricity access, sustainable transportation, industrial competitiveness, and long-term economic growth. Moreover, awareness of investment opportunities and complementary business models to complete the value chain is low, further constraining the sector’s growth development.
The Ghana Chamber of Clean Energy (GCCE) has been established to address these gaps by bringing together sector players to influence policy, protect the sector’s interest, unlock financing, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate a just and inclusive energy transition that delivers real value for businesses and national development alike.
